It is important to consider women as part of the mainstream cinema and recognise their work on a larger scale, says Aruna Raje

Pune, February 8, 2023: “A large number of characters in the films are played by men. Women generally play the role of romantic interests and rarely get lead or co-lead roles in box office top films. More men contribute to film-making,” said Dr Lakshmi Lingam, Dean, School of Media and Cultural Studies of Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Science.

She was speaking on the topic ‘Making Films & Watching Films: Gender in Hindi Cinema’ during the Masterclass at the 21st Pune International Film Festival organized by the Pune Film Foundation and Maharashtra Government today at PVR Icon in Pavilion Mall on Senapati Bapat Road. Dr. Jabbar Patel, Director of PIFF was present on the occasion.

Lingham and her colleagues presented a report on the gender in Hindi Cinema and then interacted with Director Aruna Raje.

“Fields like editing, cinematography are still dominated by men. It was also observed that box-out films have out-bound subjects and women-centric films explore in-bound subjects like relationships and motherhood among others,” she said.

Aruna Raje said that it is important to consider women as a part of the main-stream cinema and recognize their work on a large scale.
