Smita Kalpvriksh Gupta on Nishabd showcasing struggles of the pride community: Everyone has the right to voice their opinion, sexuality is an individual choice

Smita Kalpvriksh Gupta plays the role of Anjana in Nishabd, an upcoming show in Atrangii. The show is based on LGBTQIA+ community and highlights their issues, both personal and professional. Smita is happy to have got this opportunity.

“I was not at all apprehensive while taking up this project. In fact, being a bold subject, I was keen on doing it. Such stories need to be told,” she says.

Sharing her experience of working with the director-producer of the series, Mitu, and her team at Positive Thinkerz, Smita adds, “She is an amazing director, hardworking and a wonderful human being. I have known her since our Balaji days and still she’s the same person. She has the same energy and enthusiasm.”

June is the pride month and that makes Nishabd all the more relevant. It is one of the reasons why Smita agreed to do the project.

“I found the concept rare and therefore felt that this would interest the audience. Kudos to Mitu for approaching such a bold and different concept. I think, conversation around same sex relationship and acceptance should happen. Everyone should have the right to voice their opinion. Sexuality is an individual choice, people should have full freedom to exercise their right. Also, I can never say no to Mitu, she’s a darling,” she says.

A general shift in programming and content are being noticed. In fact, this is the first time a series like Nishabd is being made for TV.

“I feel privileged to be a part of this series, is what I can say, because in this particular episode I play a supporting mother, who understands her son. He is in a same sex relationship, and she understands, tries to convince her husband to accept his individuality. You hardly get to hear or see such people in real life, so it’s a message to everyone not to despise or have hatred for people with different choices,” she urges.
