How do you feel when you are called a “Poet”?
Both my parents loved poetry. From early childhood I have listened to them quoting Rabindranath Tagore’s poems now and then. My mother was a well-known reciter of Bengali Poems with quite a lot of gold and silver medals to her credit. Maybe without my knowing I started loving poetry. I started writing poems, mainly English poems quite late in my life. Poetry and beauty are synonymous. Whenever we describe anything, whether music, whether nature, we say “As beautiful as poetry”. So, I was thrilled when I started writing poems. So, I feel very happy and proud to be called a “Poet”.
You have done a unique video of one of your poems with Padma Shri Anup Jalota. Tell us something about it.
Padma Shri Anup Jalota ji is very fond of my poems. So, he sang an English song for the first time in his legendary career based on my poem, “Love Grows”. In this video named “LOVE GROWS” I have recited my poem and Anup ji has sung it. This video had been released by Tips-Volume on Valentine’s Day this year. It is trending now. What do you want to tell women who want to walk on your path?
I want to say to such women, “Take up your pen and start writing, express your emotions and thoughts on paper and in no time your feelings will turn into poems”.
You have published eight books and received numerous awards for your poems. You have also received the Gold Rose from MS Productions, Buenos Aires, Argentina for your promotion of literature and culture. How do you promote literature?
I am very passionate about poetry and promote literature through poetry. I have started and am the President of the Intercultural Poetry and Performance Library (IPPL) Mumbai Chapter. I am also the Cultural Convenor and Literary Coordinator (West India) of the International Society for Intercultural Studies and Research (ISISAR).Through these forums and also independently I promote poetry in different ways. I organize peace poetry events, multilingual poetry events and global poetry events. I also try to bring the indigenous languages (tribal) into the main stream by having indigenous poetry events. I do a lot of workshops for students and teachers in schools to make them appreciate poetry and write poetry. In my forums I also promote fusion of poetry with other performing arts like dance, music and painting.
